When
a child is diagnosed with cancer, a parent’s
presence is very important. With the
uncertainties of hospital visits and treatments,
often times, parents have to take a leave of
absence which could limit their resources, and
lead to financial hardship.
The founders of BCI know firsthand the needs,
while going through the challenges of a
childhood cancer diagnosis, and would like for
parents to know that they are not alone. BCI
offers assistance with hospital meals, school
supplies, clothing, transportation, and
burial/bereavement expenses.
Proper
Meals & Diet – Is an essential part
of a patients healing process. BCI
offers gift cards and or meal tickets to
patients as well as their parent(s)
while receiving lengthy out patient
treatment. (Most hospitals do not cover
outpatient meals).
Clothing – Once a child is
diagnosed with cancer, their weight
usually fluctuates, and so does their
clothing size. BCI would like to make
this transition as comfortable as
possible. Bandanas, hats, sweaters,
socks, comfy blanket, robes, and pajamas
are always needed.

Transportation – It is imperative
that a child makes each appointment/Drs.
Visit. Many parents do not have
transportation, and due to a child’s
compromised immune system, public
transportation should probably be the
last resort. BCI will assist with
transportation needs for low income
parents with daily outpatient hospital
visits.
Burial/Bereavement – Is
unfortunately, a subject that no one
wants to touch on however, it is often a
reality. The news of a childhood
diagnosis is tough on the child,
siblings, parents, other family members
and friends and is a challenge of its
own. During the treatment process, all
involved are filled with faith and
optimism, while never expecting death as
a final outcome.
