-
Each school day, 46 children are
diagnosed with cancer.
-
One in 330 children will develop
cancer by age 20.
-
Although the 5 year survival rate is
steadily increasing, one quarter of
children will die 5 years from the
time of diagnosis.
-
Cancer remains the number one
disease killer of America’s children
– more than Cystic Fibrosis,
Muscular Dystrophy, Asthma and Aids
combined.
Cancer is the second leading cause of
death among children between ages 1 to
14 years in the United States; accidents
are the most frequent cause of death in
this age group.
The most common cancers in children
(aged 1 to 14 years) are leukemia
(particularly acute lymphocytic
leukemia), brain and other nervous
system cancers, soft tissue sarcomas,
non-Hodgkin lymphoma, and renal (Wilms)
tumors.
Over the past 25 years, there have been
significant improvements in the 5 year
relative survival rate for many
childhood cancers.
